Shuri Karate Dojo (formerly Kazoku Karate Dojo) was first established in Earley near Reading in 1995 by Adam Carter-sensei to teach children and adults the martial arts discipline of karate. There are classes each week for all levels and abilities.

We follow a structured syllabus to help take you from beginner to black belt and beyond. We teach Shitoryu Karatedo, founded by the Okinawa master Kenwa Mabuni (1899-1952) and continued with his son Kenzo Mabuni (1927-2005), a classical style of karate originally founded on the small Japanese island of Okinawa.

Today modern karate mainly concentrates on the sporting arena and sporting achievements. We believe concentrating solely on the practice of karate for sporting competition is against the fundamental principles and beliefs of the Martial Art.

The art of karate contains the element of self-defence (Karate-Jutsu). At the Shuri Karate Dojo this element is included in our studies of art.

Our function at the Shuri Karate Dojo is to promote and preserve the true essence of the art of karate and preserve its Okinawan heritage.
