We at the Shuri Karate Dojo have developed a special program to provide your child with rewarding benefits. The emphasis of our program is on establishing self-discipline and courtesy in children. The structure of respect is built into our Karate instruction.

The program provides confidence and character building by assisting the children to accomplish their goals. The Shuri Karate Dojo also teaches the child to have self-control over his or her body and develop the ability to stand up to peer pressure and other intimidating situations.

The movements of Karate develop coordination, increased strength and flexibility, which is very important during the growing years.

The foundation of the Shuri Karate Dojo is its self-defense value. We are very careful to teach our students to use common sense before self-defense and never be abusive or offensive. The result of our program is a self-confident child who does not need to bully or show off to other children.

Which can often result in better grades at school too!

Karate for children is not only fun, it provides many important benefits to young people. Some of these benefits are referred to in Japanese as "chiiku" (mental development), "tokuiku" (moral development) and "taiiku" (physical development). These are the same three classes of personal development found in traditional Japanese educational systems.

In terms of "chiiku" (mental development), karate helps build concentration, focus, clear thinking and decisiveness.

Karate has strong internal benefits as well. It helps instil patience, discipline, perseverance, understanding and open-mindedness. It builds confidence, develops self-control and increases calmness, courtesy and peace, all of which will aid everyone in every endeavour they undertake in life. These correspond to "tokuiku" (moral development).

Of course, karate is good for the body, too (taiiku). Physically it is excellent for the heart, builds strong bones and bigger muscles, creates resilience, and makes the body less susceptible to sickness and injury.

In all these ways, karate is profoundly helpful to young people in dealing with the many challenges facing them in today's society. It brings them balance and perspective at an age when these are needed most. It adds a strong foundation to their character.

If you have any questions, please feel free to talk with any of the instructors or contact us HERE. We believe strongly in the values of our training for all ages. Especially for the young, who can gain life-long benefits from our school.

Finally, the Shuri Karate Dojo is good, clean fun for kids and a great way to burn off energy. We encourage them with merit badges, trophies and "be our black belt for a day awards", for good attendance, behaviour and hard work.

Children from 6 years of age are accepted. We do on occasion accept younger children when accompanied by a parent training with their children. Please contact us for further details.
